The Likely Culprit

Usually, in instances where the heating system doesn’t start up at all, it can be attributed to an electrical malfunction. Yes, even gas furnaces and other combustion-based heating systems still rely on electrical components, like electric ignition switches and sensors. The good news is that most of the electrical components of a heating systems are more affordable than the more sensitive parts, like a heat pump’s compressor or the furnace’s burners.

Some additional signs that you might have an electrical problem in your heating system, is a constant clicking noise or a buzzing sound. Clicking is usually the sound that a heater makes when it turns on, but if it’s constantly clicking, that means that it’s trying to turn on but to no avail. Buzzing is usually a sound associated with an electrical component malfunctioning as well.

Unique Heat Pump Problems

Heat pumps are different than electric or gas furnaces, primarily because they require refrigerant in order to move heat from one place to another. This means that, unless there’s an electrical issue at play, the system will still likely run and try to heat your home.

However, if you’re feeling like no heat is coming from the air vents, even though the system has turned on, then you might be dealing with a refrigerant leak.

A heat pump will still technically run even without proper refrigerant amounts, but it’s just not going to be able to heat any of the air in your home. If this is the case, then call our team to have the leak patched and the refrigerant recharged.

Your Gas Furnace Is Still Safe

One of the first concerns we get from customers is whether their faulty gas furnace is still safe, if it’s not turning on. The good news is yes–probably.

Gas furnaces rely on a flame or heat sensor, which is a small component that detects when gas is being burned. If it doesn’t sense the heat or flame, then it shuts the system off to ensure no gas or fumes is wasted or leaked. This means that your system will never run without producing heat.

However, if this component is dirty or damaged, then you might run into problems. Also, a cracked heat exchanger could leak carbon monoxide or gas, so we recommend calling us for support to be extra safe.
