Pro Tip: When to Replace Your AC

Air conditioners require repairs over the course of their lifespans. This is an essential part of owning an air conditioning system, and it’s fine if you’ve got a great HVAC technician on your team to get to the bottom of the issue. However, sometimes repairs aren’t enough, and sometimes repairs are actually missing the point of the problem at hand.

While repairs and maintenance are required to keep your AC running in good shape, eventually your air conditioner will run into problems that these solutions can’t fix. Depreciation, inefficiency, and even worn down components will eventually make you think about whether you should replace your system with a new AC installation in Colorado Springs.

That sounds stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ll make the process easy. Follow along with us as we discuss some of the signs that your AC requires replacement and not just repairs.

Why Not Always Repair Your AC?

Replacement costs are almost always more expensive than repairs. This begs the question, why not just invest in repairs for as long as you can? That’s because air conditioners deteriorate after a certain period of time, and those repairs just aren’t worth it at a point.

Once your AC reaches 15 years in age, the parts are so worn down and outdated that you’ll be paying for more repairs, more frequently. A new system would be more efficient, and cut your need for repairs considerably.

Signs of a Failing System

Here are some signs of a failing air conditioner that needs to be replaced.

A Trend of High Energy Bills

If your air conditioner is costing too much to use per month, this is what we would call an inefficient system. Efficiency relates to how much energy the system consumes to cool your home.

Newer air conditioners use less energy than older ones, so even if your old AC still works properly, it’s likely costing too much to run and weighing down your budget more than you’d like.

An Expensive Repair

If something goes wrong with your system’s compressor, the repair cost can be hefty. Some AC repairs are a few hundred dollars or even in the thousands. Why does this matter?

Well, we think it’s important to compare this cost to a brand-new AC installation. If the repair is half of a new replacement cost or more, than we’d urge you to make the more cost-effective choice and install a new system.

Poor Overall Performance

We meet a lot of people who have underperforming air conditioners that are 10, 15, and even 20 years old. When we ask them why they still use the air conditioner, they often say “getting it fixed is cheaper than getting it replaced.”

While that might be true, it begs the question, why have an air conditioner at all if it barely keeps your home cool? The costs of repairing a 20-year-old system are almost never worth it if it can barely improve your home’s temperature by 5 or even 10 degrees. If it’s not performing well and meeting your thermostat’s input, then we urge you to get it replaced.
